Quilts of Valour FMQ

Last year I offered my longarm quilting services to Quilts of Valour. People donate quilt tops and fabric for backing and they ask longarmers to provide the batting and longarm services for free. I received these two quilts in January. One is a very busy batik quilt so I used an edge to edge design called Dazzle.

The second quilt has a lot more background space so I chose to custom quilt it. Ironically the donated quilt top was from Quiltessential’s 2011 Block of the month program and I made the identical blocks (here is a link to my finished quilt).

Darrell’s Sampler

Darrell1

Twenty four years ago my friend Darrell made this beautiful sampler quilt.  She sandwiched it, did some hand quilting and but on the binding but she never did any quilting in the 8 inch wide border. Last week she gave it to me and asked if I could put something in the border. It felt that the quilt needed some soft flowing quilting rather than lines and angles. I chose a free hand  meandering feather motif. Once I was finished the border I felt that the quilt needed something to balance the dense quilting on the border with the rest of the quilt. Darrell gave me the go ahead to put a design in the black sashing around the blocks.  I like the overall look now.  It looks more balanced.

Volunteer FMQ

I volunteered to do the free motion quilting for members of my quilt guild who made a quilt top for Our Lady of Grace.  I recently completed these two quilts.

Ioleen pieced this quilt from blocks that were donated by guild members.  She gave me the freedom to quilt it however I wanted to.  As usual, once I get going on the longarm I can’t stop myself.  Hopefully she will like it.

She also gave me this one to quilt.  It was a very busy  quilt with no open background so there was no point doing any extensive FMQ on it.  I chose Swirl ‘n Twirl to accent the fabric.

Rosalie’s Quilts

When I first saw Rosalie’s quilt tops I immediately noticed the quality of her work.  The piecing was beautiful, there were no wonky borders and the pressing was top notch.  I knew I was going to enjoy working on them.

She chose Bumpity for her beautiful flannel quilt.  I used a soft grey that worked so well within all the blocks.

For her larger quilt she picked Yo Yo and I used Glide’s mocha thread.

Thank you Rosalie.  It was truly a pleasure to work on your quilts.

Charity Quilts

Our guild is collecting baby quilts for Our Lady of Grace.  The quilts will go to pregnant or parenting teens.  I’ve made a boy and girl’s version.  I went a little overboard with the quilting, what else is new, but hopefully whoever gets them will like them.

High Tea

Another very densely custom quilted finish.  First I just did this design in pink and I was happy with it and moved on to quilting the sashing.

FMQ-1

Once I finished quilting the sashing I decided that I needed to add a little more quilting.  I came back in with orange thread and added the inner petals filled in with pebbles. Still not satisfied I added the inner orange loops.

FMQ-2

Then I decided to fill the orange loops with thread to give it more dimension. I was happy with the final design so I advance the quilt and moved on to the next section.. Then I got the bright idea to do some dense quilting in the background to allow the design to really pop forward. I lost track of how much time I put into the FMQ in the 15 white squares but it was substantial.
